One needs no excuses to spend a few days in Venice, but the exhibition on Japanese photography at Palazzo Franchetti is one more reason for a romantic weekend here.
The exhibition, PHOTOGRAPHY IN JAPAN (1860 – 1910), shows for the first time in Italy a group of 150 original prints, made by great Japanese and European photographers from 1860 until the early twentieth century. At first sight, it looks like just another pleasant exhibition, but soon you will realize you are in front of real masterpieces in photography history.
One will understand that Japanese masters worked with an “ideographic” vision composing their subjects using the scheme of the ideogram that defines them.
Works shown at Palazzo Franchetti belong to the Yokohama School where artists created a unique style; remarkable are also the photographs taken by Felice Beato who put together the most modern art form in those days, photography, and Japanese drawing tradition. Prints were made on albumin paper, then they were skilfully coloured by hand by refined painters.
A prominent subject is women’s world. Here, women are depicted on multiple levels, all of sublime beauty: from the ones busy with housework, in the workshop or in the fields, to the seductions of geishas. One photograph stands out above all the rest, a Lady washing her hair, 1880 ca. , by Kusakabe Kimbei
Last but not least, Nature that Japanese art represents as “educated” by culture, deeply moving the visitor with its landscapes of fantasy and dream.

Non c’è bisogno di avere una scusa per passare qualche giorno a Venezia, ma la mostra sulla fotografia giapponese a Palazzo Franchetti (una delle sedi espositive dell’Istituto Veneto) rappresenta una ragione in più per un romantico weekend in Laguna.
L’esposizione, LA FOTOGRAFIA DEL GIAPPONE (1860-1910), presenta per la prima volta in Italia un nucleo di 150 stampe fotografiche originali, realizzate da grandi interpreti giapponesi ed europei dal 1860 agli albori del secolo Ventesimo. A prima vista ci si troverà davanti a un evento piacevole, una splendida collezione di fotografie, ben presto però ci si renderà conto di essere di fronte a dei veri capolavori della storia delle fotografia.
Si scopre come i maestri giapponesi operassero applicando al loro lavoro una visione ” ideografica” che li portava a costruire il soggetto della scena da imprimere sulla lastra, usando lo schema dell’ideogramma che lo definiva.
Le opere esposte a Palazzo Franchetti appartengono al gruppo della Scuola di Yokohama, i cui artisti diedero vita a uno stile unico; di grande rilievo solo anche le fotografie di Felice Beato che univa la forma artistica più d’avanguardia di quel tempo, la fotografia, con la tradizione delle grafiche giapponesi. Le stampe venivano realizzate su carta all’albumina e delicatamente colorate a mano da raffinati artisti.
Una occhio di riguardo va al mondo femminile. Qui l’immagine della donna è colta nei sui molteplici aspetti della bellezza sublime: da colei che si occupa delle attività delle casa, della bottega o dei campi, fino alle rappresentazioni della seduzione della donna di piacere. Una foto per tutte vale la visita alla mostra, quella Donna che si lava i capelli, 1880 ca. di Kusakabe Kimbei.
Per finire la natura che il Giappone rappresenta come elemento “educato” dalla cultura, commuove il visitatore con i sui paesaggi che liberano la fantasia e portano a vivere il sogno.
